| Fort Smith native readies for U.N. post
Thursday, Jul 8, 2004 By Alison Vekshin Stephens Washington Bureau WASHINGTON -- Fort Smith native Anne Woods Patterson expects to be sworn in to a top-level post at the United Nations by the end of the month, her husband said Wednesday. Patterson was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 25 to become deputy U.S. representative to the United Nations, the second-ranking U.S. ambassador to the international body. Patterson is attending transition meetings in New York this week and could not be reached Wednesday. Reached by telephone at their home in Falls Church, Va., David Patterson said his wife is expecting to be sworn in later this month at the State Department, where she works as deputy inspector general. The couple is expecting to move by Aug. 10 to a government-supplied apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan with views of Central Park. As the U.S. deputy representative, Anne Patterson's responsibilities will include coordinating the work of the U.N. mission and overseeing almost 150 U.S. employees. In her 31-year diplomacy career, Patterson served as the U.S. ambassador to Colombia from 2000 to 2003 and ambassador to El Salvador from 1997 to 2000. Patterson is replacing James Cunningham, who has held the post since 1999. He has been nominated to become U.S. representative to the Vienna office of the United Nations. -- 30 -- |
