Southland to continue discussions with UCA Wednesday, Jun 8, 2005 By Harry King Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - The Southland Conference Board of Directors has decided to continue potential membership discussions with the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Last month, UCA, A&M-Corpus, University of Texas-Pan American, Tarleton State and Centenary made presentations to board members during a meeting in Houston. The board, which consists of the presidents of Southland schools, met during the weekend in Galveston, Texas, to review the information. Southland commissioner Tom Burnett said Tuesday in a release that the board members appreciated the interest shown by the various institutions. "The board did not reject any institution in this process, but did reach a consensus level to continue its conversations with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Central Arkansas," he said. The Southland is made up of 11 schools, but Louisiana-Monroe will become a full-time member of the Sun Belt Conference for the 2006-07 school year. The Southland is likely to expand to 12 teams or remain at 10. During the summer, Southland visitation teams will spend time at UCA and A&M-Corpus. |
