Bush visit to Arkansas on hold Saturday, Sep 24, 2005 By Alison Vekshin Stephens Washington Bureau WASHINGTON -- With Hurricane Rita fast approaching the Texas coastline, the White House has put on hold President Bush's scheduled visit to Arkansas on Saturday, a White House official said Friday. Bush may still make the trip on Sunday or may again postpone it depending on the storm, said White House spokesman Allen Abney. "We're continuing to monitor Hurricane Rita," Abney said. "He's going to monitor the storm in Colorado and will make decisions at that time." Bush will be at the U.S. Northern Command in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Saturday. The command center is supporting the Homeland Security Department and the Federal Emergency Management Agency in monitoring Hurricane Rita and preparing disaster relief. The White House also canceled Bush's planned visit to San Antonio, Texas, on Friday because the search and rescue teams he was to meet moved to Houston, Abney said. On Tuesday, the White House announced Bush would begin a tour of states housing Hurricane Katrina evacuees on Friday, but did not release a detailed itinerary. Bush was to visit Alabama on Friday and Arkansas and Texas on Saturday. Arkansas is home to about 50,000 Katrina evacuees, many of whom are staying in church camps and other shelters across the state after being processed at Fort Chaffee. -- 30 -- |
