Lincoln to tour state on Medicare

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., will tour Arkansas next month to discuss new prescription-drug coverage options available to Medicare recipients starting in January, her office announced Monday.

Lincoln is scheduled to visit Springdale and Fort Smith on October 13 to discuss new drug coverage plans Medicare will offer through insurance companies and other private carriers.

"Plan marketing will begin on schedule on October 1," Mark McClellan, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said in a statement.

"As we approach the start of enrollment on November 15, Medicare will work with our partners in Arkansas and around the country to help people with Medicare make their decisions," he said.

Lincoln's tour also will include stops in McGehee on Oct. 4, Little Rock and Malvern on Oct. 12, and Jonesboro and Batesville on Oct. 14.

Medicare is a 40-year-old health insurance program for 40 million of the nation's elderly and disabled, including 700,000 Arkansans representing one-third of the state's population.

Beneficiaries can join a Medicare prescription drug plan between Nov. 15 and May 15, 2006. Those who join by Dec. 31 will have their plan go in effect on Jan. 1, 2006.
