Boozman stands by DeLay
Thursday, Sep 29, 2005

WASHINGTON -- Rep. John Boozman, R-Rogers, on Wednesday said he continues to support House Majority Leader Tom DeLay despite his indictment for conspiracy to violate campaign finance laws.

Boozman, the only Republican in Arkansas' six-member congressional delegation, called DeLay a "very effective leader" who should not resign from Congress.

"He has done a very good job of pushing the party forward," Boozman said. "The good thing about Congress is every two years we stand for reelection and his voters could decide that."

DeLay announced Wednesday he would temporarily step down from the leadership post in accordance with House rules after a Texas grand jury indicted him and two associates on charges of criminal conspiracy in connection with a plan to help Republicans win control of the Texas House in the 2002 elections.

DeLay vowed to fight the indictment, saying it was politically motivated.

Boozman said he agreed with DeLay stepping down from the leadership role. House Republicans on Wednesday approved Rep. David Dreier, R-Calif., to step in for DeLay as majority leader.

"It was the correct thing that with this looming over him that he should step down," Boozman said. "At some point, a jury will decide if he has done anything wrong."
