More rain needed, governor says, urging continued prayer Wednesday, Jan 11, 2006 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Gov. Mike Huckabee said Tuesday that Arkansas needs more rain than the showers that drenched much of the state Tuesday, and he urged Arkansans to continue praying for the wet stuff. Monday, the governor, a Baptist minister, issued a proclamation urging people to pray for rain. The proclamation was issued as the weather service forecast a 40 percent chance of showers over much of the state. Tuesday, Huckabee said his was a long-term call for prayer, not just one day. The governor said he didn't think his call for prayers cause Tuesday's showers. "But quite frankly, we don't need it this one day. We need a sustained rain," he said. Some parts of the state are 15 to 20 inches below normal rainfall, creating drought conditions and high fire danger, the governor said. "We really do need sustained and prolonged rain," he said, "not Noah and the flood-type of rain ... all in 40 days, but we would like seriously to hope and pray for significant rainfall over the next few months to try to get us back up to normal levels." |
