Beebe outraises, outspends, Hutchinson Thursday, Mar 16, 2006 By Doug Thompson Arkansas News Bureau FAYETTEVILLE - Democratic candidate for governor Mike Beebe raised and spent more than Republican counterpart Asa Hutchinson last month, campaign finance reports filed Wednesday showed. Beebe's campaign raised $203,547 in February and Hutchinson raised $173,850, according to reports filed with the secretary of state's office. Beebe's campaign spent $172,722 in February, compared to $73,120 for Hutchinson. The Beebe campaign's explanation for spending more than twice what Hutchinson spent? "We're running twice the campaign," spokesman Zac Wright said. Overall, Beebe has raised $2.7 million and had $1.8 million on hand at the end of the month. Hutchinson has raised $1.26 million and had $675,888 on hand. "We knew going into this campaign that we'd have to be very careful with funds and to plan strategically," Hutchinson campaign spokesman David Kinkade said. "When we started, we expected a primary with Lt. Gov. Win Rockefeller and we knew we'd be facing an opponent with a great deal more money than we had." Rockefeller later dropped out of the race because of health reasons. Campaign spending for February is in line with Hutchinson's plans, Kinkade said, adding, "We're looking to run a tight ship." In the Democratic race for lieutenant governor, Sen. Tim Wooldridge of Paragould reported raising $43,695 in February, Rep. Jay Martin of North Little Rock raised $32,295 and former state Rep. Mike Hathorn of Huntsville raised $26,005. Democrat Drew Pritt of Warren said he mailed his report. It was not available at the secretary of state's office Wednesday. A report was also not available for Democrat Bill Halter, who dropped out of the governor's race last week and announced he would run for lieutenant governor. Reports for Republican candidates were not available at the end of the business day Wednesday. Those candidate are former U.S. Attorney Chuck Banks of Little Rock, state Sen. Jim Holt and state Rep. Doug Matayo, both of Springdale. In the Democratic race for attorney general, Rep. Dustin McDaniel of Jonesboro reported raising $54,301 in February. Saline County Prosecutor Robert Herzfeld raised $24,085 and North Little Rock City Attorney Paul Suskie $22,879 in contributions for the month. Former state Sen. Gunner DeLay of Fort Smith, the only Republican candidate, reported raising $13,570. |
