Herzfeld, Suskie, DeLay file for AG on Monday Tuesday, Apr 4, 2006 By Rob Moritz Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Two Democrats and a Republican filed to run for attorney general Monday, the next to last day of the two-week filing period for the 2006 election season. Saline County Prosecutor Robert Herzfeld of Benton and North Little Rock City Attorney Paul Suskie filed as candidates in the state Democratic Party primary. Republican Gunner DeLay of Fort Smith also filed Monday. In other races, former state Rep. Mike Hathorn, a Democrat from Huntsville, filed for lieutenant governor, and Harrison lawyer Mac Campbell, also a Democrat, filed to run for state treasurer. The deadline to file for the May 23 state primary election is noon today. The general election is Nov. 7. As of Monday afternoon, 255 people had filed to run for state and federal offices in the May primary and for judicial seats, which are non-partisan. Herzfeld said his experience as a prosecutor make him the best qualified among the Democratic candidates. State Rep. Dustin McDaniel, D-Jonesboro, filed for the Democratic primary last week. "I'm the only candidate in this race who has ever prosecuted a major felony crime, including murder, child abuse and meth manufacturing" Herzfeld said. He also noted that his lawsuit against Gov. Mike Huckabee in 2004 resulted in changes in the governor's executive clemency policies. Suskie said his experience as North Little Rock city attorney, plus his National Guard service and his work in the community, make him the best candidate. "I have a long history of public service, whether it's cleaning up neighborhoods in North Little Rock or fighting terrorism in Afghanistan, I want to take my background and experience to the attorney general's office," he said. DeLay, a lawyer, said he is optimistic about becoming the first elected Republican attorney general in Arkansas and is traveling to counties around the state organizing support. Hathorn touted his experience and knowledge of state government during a speech to a crowd of more than 100 on the Capitol steps. Other Democrats who have already filed for lieutenant governor include North Little Rock businessman Bill Halter and state Sen. Tim Wooldridge of Paragould. Republican candidates who have filed include attorney Chuck Banks of Little Rock, state Sen. Jim Holt of Springdale and state Rep. Doug Matayo of Springdale. Campbell, who worked for U.S. Sen. Blanche, D-Ark., in Washington, D.C., filed for treasurer Monday. Current Treasurer Gus Wingfield, D-Delight, has decided not to seek re-election. Former state Reps. Don House of Walnut Ridge and Martha Shoffner of Newport previously file for the Democratic primary for state treasurer. |
