Broyles presents 'playbook' to Alzheimer's caregivers
Tuesday, Apr 11, 2006

Arkansas News Bureau

The Alzheimer's Caregiver Playbook, which is free of charge to Arkansas families, was inspired by Broyles' experiences with his wife Barbara, who suffered the disease for seven years until her death in 2004.

"Early on, I promised myself that one day my family would share with other families dealing with Alzheimer's all that we learned from our research and experiences," Broyles said during a news conference at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences' Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging.

The guide was written to give people practical tips on how to help their loved ones, Broyles said.

Alzheimer's disease and how to help the caregivers has been a passion of Broyles' since his wife died. Last year, he testified to Senate and House committees in support of legislation requiring certified nurse assistants to receive an additional 15 hours of training in the care of patients with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.

The legislation was adopted as Act 1184 of 2005, the Barbara Broyles Training Program.

Nationally, about 4.5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease, about 56,000 of them are in Arkansas.

Wal-Mart is helping distribute copies of the book to families of people with Alzheimer's, and in May copies of the book will be available in the pharmacy department at Wal-Mart stores.
