Former state treasurer hospitalized

Former state Treasurer Jimmie Lou Fisher was hospitalized Wednesday after suffering pain in her legs and difficulty walking, friends and family said.

Doctors at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center in Little Rock were running tests and had not made a final diagnosis Wednesday afternoon, said Fisher's sister, Debbie Rogers of Little Rock. Early test results were encouraging and Fisher's condition was improving, she said.

"Ms. Fisher is in good condition and in high spirits, and is undergoing further tests," said a statement issued by her family. "She appreciates everyone's thoughts and prayers."

State Rep. Dustin McDaniel, D-Jonesboro, said after a visit to Fisher that doctors believe Fisher's symptoms are consistent with a mild stroke, but that further tests are needed.

Fisher, 64, will remain hospitalized "at least overnight if not the next day" while further tests are run, said McDaniel, a Democratic candidate for attorney general. Fisher is his campaign chairwoman.

Fisher was laughing, joking and alert with a slight slurring of speech, McDaniel said. Reports of paralysis were exaggerated, he said.

"She could always move her legs; It was more like having both of her legs asleep at the same time," McDaniel said. "Her symptoms got better throughout the day. Right now, her worst symptom is a headache."

Fisher is scheduled to speak at Democratic fundraisers and other events as soon as next week. Rogers said no announcements would be made about Fisher's schedule until doctors have completed tests.

Fisher was the Democratic nominee for governor in 2002. She lost to Republican Gov. Mike Huckabee.

"I'm sorry to hear about Jimmy Lou's illness. I will pray for her quick recovery," Huckabee said Wednesday.
