ATRS board interviews candidates for executive director post Tuesday, Sep 12, 2006 By Rob Moritz Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - The board of trustees of the Arkansas Teacher Retirement System interviewed three people for the soon-to-be vacated position of executive director on Monday, but no decision was made. Board Chairman John Fortenberry said after the meeting that board members are considering reopening the search process to find a successor to David Malone, who has said he will step down as head of the $10 billion retirement system at the end of the year. "Everything is in limbo at the moment," Fortenberry said. "We felt as if we had three good interviews (Monday), but we're not sure that we're ready to make a selection. If we do not select one of the people, we may consider opening up the applications again. That decision has not been made." A fourth candidate, who was scheduled to be interviewed Monday, had to cancel because of recent eye surgery. Fortenberry said the board would try to reschedule the interview. If an interview is not arranged within the next few weeks, the candidate likely would be asked to reapply during a new application process, he said. Malone has been the system's executive director since January 2003. More than 50 candidates applied for the job, which pays $133,290 this fiscal year. Fortenberry said the board does not feel any pressure to hire anyone immediately because Malone has said he plans to stay through the end of the year. "We're hoping to select the best person that can do a good job for the Arkansas Teacher Retirement System and we're not going to be rushed into doing anything," he said. "We are going to take our time." Malone was out of town and did not attend Monday's meeting. Candidates interviewed Monday in executive session included: -Steven Bland of Kirkland, Wash, former risk analyst with Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle. -Kent Layne Oots of North Little Rock, vice president, manager of futures and options at Stephens Inc. -David Scott of Little Rock, an attorney and financial adviser. He is the son of former state Sen. Jim Scott of Warren. The fourth candidate, who had to cancel because of recent eye surgery, was Matthew Hutcheson of Tigard, Ore. Hutcheson was formerly a consultant with The Heintzberger Co. in Oregon. |
