DeLay: McDaniel afraid to take stand on homosexuality Wednesday, Nov 1, 2006 By John Lyon Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - With one week to go before the general election, Republican attorney general candidate Gunner DeLay accused Democratic opponent Dustin McDaniel on Tuesday of being afraid to take a stand on homosexuality. DeLay said McDaniel he firmly believes homosexuality is immoral and wrong and said McDaniel recently chose not to answer when asked if he believes homosexuality is immoral. "People need to understand what is right and wrong is not determined by an opinion poll or even a majority vote. The boundaries of right and wrong do not evolve over time; they are determined by our Creator," DeLay said in a release. Recently, McDaniel said he supports civil unions for same-sex couples. He later attempted to clarify his position, saying he has no agenda to undermine Arkansas' constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between a man and a woman. A television ad that DeLay began airing last week shows a montage of photos of same-sex couples and says McDaniel openly supports "the gay agenda in favor of same-sex civil unions." DeLay says in the ad that as attorney general he will fight any efforts by courts or the Congress "to undermine traditional marriage in Arkansas." Melissa Moody, spokeswoman for the McDaniel campaign, released the following statement Tuesday: "Lying is immoral. Gunner said Dustin is not patriotic, which is a lie. He said Dustin is soft on crime, and the Arkansas Fraternal Order of Police knows that is a lie. "Now he says Dustin wants to undermine our traditional definition of marriage, and that is an absolute lie. What's truly immoral is that the people of Arkansas will have to listen to Gunner continue these lies about Dustin's record and Dustin's values for the next seven days." DeLay is a Fort Smith lawyer. McDaniel is a lawyer and state representative from Jonesboro. His campaign has been endorsed by the Arkansas Fraternal Order of Police. |
