Education Department accepting applications to teach in Taiwan Friday, Jan 19, 2007 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - The state Board of Education announced Thursday it is accepting applications for a program to send Arkansas teachers to Taiwan. Up to 10 teachers will be selected to participate in the Teaching in Taiwan program during the 2007-08 school year. Teachers will sign an 11-month contract to run from August to July. "We are very pleased to be able to offer Arkansas teachers this incredible opportunity," Education Commissioner Ken James said in a news release. "A year immersed in the culture of Taiwan will no doubt prove to be a terrific experience for our teachers as well as provide their future students here in Arkansas a unique window on the world." Former Gov. Mike Huckabee previously said the program grew out of a meeting he had with Taiwan's minister of education while on a visit to the Asian country in June. Teachers will spend their first month in cultural training. Teaching assignments for the rest of the year will vary according to the school but will involve teaching English to students and teachers. To be eligible, teachers must have a current Arkansas teaching license. A master's degree is preferred but not required. Applications and answers to frequently asked questions are available online. ------- On the Net: arkansased.org/teachers/taiwan.html. |
