LITTLE ROCK - Maj. Gen. Bill Wofford, a 35-year military veteran, was named Friday as Adjutant General for the Arkansas National Guard.

Gov. Mike Beebe named Wofford to replace Maj. Gen. Ron Chastain, who was appointed by former Gov. Mike Huckabee.

"Major General Wofford has given more than 35 years of his life in service to our nation and has demonstrated exceptional leadership and management skills during that service," Beebe said in a release.

"Since joining the Arkansas Army National Guard in December 1975, Bill has represented the Guard, Arkansas and the United States with integrity and honor at posts both stateside and overseas."

Beebe also complimented Chastain for his service under the previous administration.

Wofford, 57, is a 1971 graduate of Arkansas Tech University and served four years on active duty with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., and the 1st Armored Division in Germany.

Upon returning to the state, Wofford joined the Guard and served 17 years in troop units, commanding at the unit, battalion and brigade levels, including leading the 2nd Battalion, 142nd Field Artillery, VII Corps Artillery during Operation Desert Storm.

Wofford has served in Arkansas as the director of Military Support, coordinating and managing Army and Air National Guard support during state emergencies. He has also served as the state's Task Force Commander responsible for Soldier Readiness Processing and mobilization support for more than 4,000 soldiers deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Wofford has earned the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal among other numerous decorations.

Also Friday, the governor named Jane Christenson of Harrison to the Arkansas State Police Commission and Chandra Hicks of Little Rock as the newest administrative law judge for the Arkansas Workers' Compensation Commission.

Christenson is publisher of the Newton County Times and holds multiple positions at the Harrison Daily Times. Her father, the late J.E. Dunlap, served more than 22 years on the commission.

Hicks has served the past three years as the attorney for the Workers' Compensation Commission.
