Beebe appoints Suskie to PSC, Marks to ADEQ Wednesday, Jan 31, 2007 By Jason Wiest Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Gov. Mike Beebe shook up the leadership of the state utility regulatory agency Tuesday, naming Paul Suskie, the North Little Rock city attorney, to head the Arkansas Public Service Commission. Beebe also named Teresa Marks as director of the state Department of Environmental Quality. Suskie replaces PSC commissioner Randy Bynum, whose term had expired, and was designated by Beebe as chairman of the commission, replacing Sandra Huchstetter as PSC chief, Beebe spokesman Matt DeCample said. DeCample said he knew of no plan for Hochstetter, an appointee of former Gov. Mike Huckabee, to leave agency. Her term expires in 2011. The term of the third commissioner, Daryl Bassett, expires in 2009. Suskie, 35, has served as North Little Rock city attorney since 2000 and says the experience there will be valuable in his new post. North Little Rock owns the state's largest municiple electric utility. "I definitely want to try to bring a lot of common sense and I want to be very judicial in my thought process as well as be an advocate for our ratepayers," he said. Suskie ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for attorney general last year. He lost a primary runoff to Dustin McDaniel, who was elected attorney general in the November general election. A major in Arkansas Army National Guard, Suskie has served a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Marks, 49, replaces Marcus Devine, who headed the agency under Huckabee. The past four years, during Beebe's only term as state attorney general, Marks was deputy attorney general for public protection. In 2003, she helped negotiate an agreement between Arkansas, Oklahoma and the Environmental Protection Agency to reduce phosphorus levels in waterways in and around Northwest Arkansas cities. Marks also served four years as head of the attorney general's antitrust division. |
