Ross seeks expanded child health coverage Saturday, Feb 17, 2007 Stephens Washington Bureau WASHINGTON - Rep. Mike Ross, D-Prescott, and a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced legislation Friday to expand health insurance coverage for children. The "Healthy Kids Act of 2007" funds the State Children's Health Insurance Program so that no child enrolled in a health plan loses coverage. It also provides financial incentives to states that increase enrollment in Medicaid and SCHIP programs. More than 68,000 children in Arkansas benefit from the child health insurance program. "As a pharmacy owner with my wife, I have seen far too many families come through our doors who cannot afford health care for their children," Ross said. "This is America and we can do better." The bill would provide a tax credit to families who purchase employer-based health coverage for their children and it would broaden Medicaid enrollment guidelines for children who qualify for food stamps or school lunch programs. Ross is on the health subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where the legislation will be considered. |
