Lt. Governor submits revised lottery proposal Friday, Oct 19, 2007 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Lt. Gov. Bill Halter said Thursday he has submitted a revised version of his ballot proposal for a state lottery to the state attorney general's office. Halter wants Arkansans to vote on a proposed constitutional amendment to create a state lottery to fund college scholarships. He submitted a version of his proposal to Attorney General Dustin McDaniel in September, but McDaniel rejected it, citing unclear language. The attorney general's approval of the popular name and ballot title of a proposed ballot item is required before supporters can begin collecting signatures on petitions to place the item on the ballot. "I am delighted that we have taken another step closer towards allowing Arkansans to decide for themselves if our state deserves its own scholarship lottery," Halter said Thursday in a news release. "Every day, Arkansans cross state lines to play lotteries that benefit others. Given a choice, I believe our state will vote to establish our own scholarship lottery that keeps our money here at home helping Arkansans." Bud Jackson, spokesman for Halter's Hope for Arkansas lottery campaign, said the revised version addresses McDaniel's concerns. If McDaniel approves the new wording, supporters will have to collect nearly 78,000 signatures to place the item on the 2008 general election ballot. |
