Governor declares two counties disaster areas Saturday, Oct 20, 2007 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Gov. Mike Beebe declared two Arkansas counties state disaster areas Friday due to damage from storms that struck the state this week. The declaration covers Crittenden and Lincoln counties, and releases $100,000 from the Governor's Disaster Fund for use by the state Department of Emergency Management through the Individual Assistance Program. Affected residents in both counties can apply for assistance at a local Department of Human Services office in West Memphis or Star City beginning Monday. Preliminary damage assessments are being conducted in each county to determine the extent and amount of damage, Beebe's office said. Officials said a tornado Wednesday cut a 5 1/2-mile swath near Star City, destroying or damaging 10 residences, while high winds near Edmondson destroyed two mobile homes and injured three people. |
