Sun Belt Tournament in Spa City
Tuesday, Oct 23, 2007

Arkansas News Bureau

HOT SPRINGS - Both the men's and women's Sun Belt Conference basketball tournaments will be held at Summit Arena in Hot Springs for three years beginning in 2009.

The arena seats 6,000 and adjoins the city's convention center.

Last fall, the 13 schools in the Sun Belt voted to move the annual tournament to a neutral site beginning in 2009. Five cities submitted proposals to host the tournament and officials visited three cities. Two cities made formal presentations to the Sun Belt's Executive Committee on Oct. 10 in Mobile, Ala.

The tournament was held in Biloxi, Miss., in 1992 and 1993, but since then, the tournament has been held in the city of one of the Sun Belt schools.

First-round games will be played at campus sites just as they were this year. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be in Hot Springs.

Arkansas-Little Rock was host to the Sun Belt tournament in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 2000. Arkansas State University is also in the league.
