Former Felsenthal treasurer and recorder charged with theft Saturday, Nov 10, 2007 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - The former treasurer and recorder of Felsenthal in southern Arkansas faces theft and other felony charges after a state audit revealed she improperly received $77,000 in city funds, a state auditor told lawmakers Friday. Linda Miller resigned from her $72,550 post earlier this year. She was arrested and charged in Union County with four counts of theft of property, three counts of forgery and one count of tampering with a public record, auditor Bobbie Killingsworth told the Legislative Joint Auditing Committee. Auditors discovered the unauthorized payments after noticing a check payable to Miller had been posted as "void" in Miller's office journal but had cleared the bank. "We also noted Ms. Miller maintained a separate payroll record for her overtime hours," Killingsworth said. City council minutes had been altered to reflect approved overtime for Miller, she said. Between Jan. 1, 2004, and April 24 of this year, three other city employees, including Mayor Malcolm George, were reimbursed more than $5,000 in funds for nonbusiness expenses, including mileage, meals and the purchase of dog food, Killingsworth said. The mayor has reimbursed the city $289, Killingsworth said. The audit also found sewer and water customers paid $105,740 to the city during from Jan. 1, 2004 to April, 24, but only $99,187 was deposited in the bank. |
