Company to make to new wipes from old cloth

ROGERS - A company that uses industrial by-products to make new material will operate from a previously abandoned plant here, officials announced Tuesday.

Strateline Industries will make fabric for wet wipes and other non-woven products out of scraps and pieces left over from textile industries, material that could otherwise wind up in landfills. The new operation will employ 150 people within three years after an investment of $63 million, company spokesmen said.

At least 200 local residents and community leaders joined company officials and Gov. Mike Beebe at grand opening ceremonies.

"It doesn't get much better than this," a company that creates new jobs while helping reduce the flow of waste with new, innovative technologies and great potential for growth, Beebe said. "This is the type of economic development we want."

Figures on total payroll for the new plant were not released.

Strateline will move into the former Scott Paper plant that closed in January.

Scott Paper had been operated by the Polymer Group since 1992. It manufactured spun lace fabrics used in wipes for hygienic and industrial use, but left 120 workers jobless when the company moved operations to New Jersey.

Strateline chairman Michael Sitton said the company would hire many of the former Scott plant employees and was fortunate to have a trained, experienced work force readily available.
