Still time to transfer voter registration before Feb. 5 primary
Wednesday, Jan 23, 2008

Arkansas News Bureau

Act 560 of 2007 allows voters who have moved within the state to transfer their registration from one county to another up to four days before an election. Before the law was passed, voters had to make the change 30 days before an election.

The deadline to apply for new registration in Arkansas before the presidential primary has passed, though voters still have time to register before the May 20 state primary. That deadline is April 21.

Voters who will be unavoidably absent from the polls on Feb. 5 can request absentee ballots from their county clerks. Mailed absentee ballot applications must include the voter's party preference and must be received at the county clerk's office by Jan. 29.

Each county will also provide at least one early voting location, usually the county courthouse. Early voting will begin Jan. 29 and end Feb. 4.

Polls will be open 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on election day. Under Arkansas' open primary system, a voter can request a Republican, Democratic or Green Party ballot, regardless of the voter's party affiliation.
