Dillard's sales fall 12 percent in January Friday, Feb 8, 2008 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Dillard's Inc. reported Thursday that its overall sales during the month of January fell to $435.2 million, down 12 percent compared to the same month last year. Same-store sales also fell 12 percent for the month, Dillard's said. Dillard's said sales for the month were down partly because New Year's Day shopping activity occurred in the December fiscal month this year and in the January fiscal month last year. "Management estimates the unfavorable impact of this New Year's Day-related calendar shift to be approximately 8 percent in both total and comparable stores for the four week period discussed," the Dillard's press release said. Cosmetics sales declined during the month but were above the company's average sales performance, Dillard's said. Sales in the home, furniture and other category were significantly below trend. For the fiscal year, Dillard's reported sales of $7.2 billion, down 4 percent from the previous year when total sales were $7.6 billion. Same-store sales fell 5 percent on the year. Shares of Dillard's (NYSE: DDS) closed Thursday at $19.32, up 95 cents for a 5.2 percent gain. |
