SWEPCO donates $1 million to community college in Hope
Wednesday, Feb 13, 2008

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK - Southwestern Electric Power Company announced Tuesday that it had donated $1 million to the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope Foundation to fund scholarships for technical and industrial programs.

The state Public Service Commission in November approved SWEPCO's request to build a 600-megawatt, $1.3 billion coal-fired power plant near Fulton in Hempstead County.

"This gift is so important in providing access to necessary training and education that citizens in Hempstead County and surrounding areas need as community supporters of the Turk Power Plant project," SWEPCO President Venita McCellon said in a new release announcing the largest single educational gift given by SWEPCO and the largest gift ever received by the school.

Students who receive the scholarship also will be able to attend Texarkana College in Texarkana or Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas.

Last month, a group of Hempstead County landowners who oppose the plant appealed the PSC's decision to the state Court of Appeals.

Earlier this month, the Arkansas Coalition for Clean Energy asked Gov. Mike Beebe to halt any permits for coal-fired plants until the Governor's Commission on Global Warming, created by the Legislature in 2007, can complete its work and make recommendations.
