Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK - The number of homes sold in Arkansas in December fell 22.4 percent compared to the same month last year, while the average price of homes sold rose 1.5 percent, the Arkansas Realtors Association reported Thursday.

Historically, 2006 was the second-best year on record for real estate in Arkansas, the association said.

Statewide, 1,837 homes were sold in December for an average price of $156,448.

Pulaski County had the most home sales in the state in December, although sales declined 15.3 percent from December 2006. Benton and Washington counties rounded out the top three counties last month in terms of sales, reporting declines of 39.2 percent and 32.9 percent, respectively.

Saline County ranked fourth last month in home sales, which fell 11.7 percent there.

On the year, statewide home sales were down 8.9 percent. The average price of a home in 2007 rose 1.3 percent over prices in 2006 to $152,827.

The report contains data for more than 50 percent of the state's housing market and includes all the major metropolitan areas.
