Created by the Legislature last year, the board is charged with making recommendations to lawmakers on the creation, placement and redistricting of district court judgeships. The state Supreme Court is responsible for appointing seven of the board's 11 members. Of the remaining four positions, two must be state senators appointed by the chairman of the interim Senate Judiciary Committee and two must be state representatives appointed by the chairman of the interim House Judiciary Committee. The Supreme Court's first appointees to the board are West Helena District Judge Rusty Porter; Paragould District Judge Dan Stidham; Madison County Judge Wes Fowler; Camden Mayor Chris Claybaker; Chief Justice Jim Hannah; Fort Smith lawyer Eddie Walker; and Garland County Circuit Judge Marcia Hearnsberger. Clerks for the state House and Senate said Thursday they were not aware if legislative appointees had been named. |
