Three named to Daisy Gaston Bates Holiday Committee; civil rights leader honored Tuesday, Feb 19, 2008 By Rob Moritz Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Gov. Mike Beebe announced three appointments to the new Daisy Bates Holiday Committee on Monday during a speech at a forum honoring the late civil rights leader and her husband. "We celebrate today ... the contributions of Daisy Bates and those people who understand how significant and important it is to remind others of those contributions and that sacrifices," Beebe said during a speech to the L.C. & Daisy Bates Leadership Forum. The forum, held at Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Little Rock, was in observance of the state holiday honoring Bates, who was adviser to nine black teens who integrated Central High School in 1957. The Bates holiday is observed in conjunction with President's Day. During his speech, the governor announced his three appointments to the recently enacted Daisy Gaston Bates Holiday Committee. The three are Cora McHenry of North Little Rock, who will serve as chairman, and Phyllis Dickerson of Little Rock and Theman Taylor of Conway. The committee was established under Act 1583 of 2007 and is charged with promoting awareness and appreciation for the legacy and principles of Daisy Bates, along with promoting racial harmony, mentoring and leadership responsibilities. Former Gov. Mike Huckabee signed Act 304 of 2001, which created Daisy Gaston Bates Day. |
