Incoming Lyon College students to get laptops Tuesday, Mar 4, 2008 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Starting in August, each incoming freshman at Lyon College will receive a laptop programmed with the software needed for classes and extracurricular activities, the school announced Monday. The cost of the laptops will be included in the tuition of new students entering the 500-student liberal arts college in Batesville in the 2008-2009 academic year, officials said. "This will also relieve parents and students of deciding what computer to buy and ensure that every student has equal access to learning tools," Lyon College President Walter Roettger said in a release. Beginning next fall, tuition for incoming freshmen and transfer students will increase to $26,024 per year, while current students will pay $24,224 per year. Tuition for the current academic year at Lyon is $22,604. Students already enrolled at Lyon who will not receive laptops from the college but still have access to computer labs on campus, college spokeswoman Chandra Huston said. Students will receive the computers during new student orientation, beginning Aug. 21. The college said it will also maintain the computers. The laptops are part the college's new initiative, tabbed "The Lyon Experience," that will also includes an endowed, two-week international studies program that requires students to pay only for meals and incidentals, and a new "experiential transcript" to document student achievement outside of class for interested potential employers. |
