Ten seek to run for national, state offices as independent candidates Tuesday, Mar 11, 2008 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Ten people seeking to run for state or national office as independent candidates filed notices of candidacy intent during the political filing period that ended Monday, the secretary of state's office said. To appear on the ballot, the office-seekers must collect a requisite number of signatures and submit them to the secretary of state by May 1. Don Hamrick of Wilburn and Richard D. Percefull of Bismarck are both seeking to run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Mark Pryor. Each must collect at least 10,000 signatures of registered voters. Pryor filed to run for re-election to a second term and drew no Republican opponent. Rebekah Kennedy of Fort Smith has said she will challenge Pryor as a Green Party candidate. Eight people are aiming to get on the ballot as independent candidates for state representative. They are Mal Stokes Jr. of Barton, seeking to represent District 13; Trent Eilts of Cabot, District 15; Robert C. Webb of Little Rock, District 34; John Wayne Harty of Cabot, District 48; Robert Philyaw of Earle, District 54; Jeff Hall of Clinton, District 70; Marjorie LeClair of Shirley, District 70; and Bonnie B. Brown of Mountain Home, District 81. To get on the ballot as an independent candidate for the Legislature, a person must collect either 2,000 signatures or 3 percent of the number of votes cast in the most recent gubernatorial election in the district the person wishes to represent, whichever number is smaller. |
