Phillips Community College gets $2 million federal grant for biofuels training Thursday, Mar 13, 2008 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas will train students in the biofuels industry with a $1.98 million grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor and announced by members of the Arkansas congressional delegation Wednesday. The competitive grant is part of a program designed to help community colleges equip workers with the skills needed by growing local industries. The college, with campuses in DeWitt, Helena-West Helena and Stuttgart, said the grant will help it train at least 550 workers for jobs in the region's growing renewable energy industry. The Delta region currently has six bio-refineries either running or under construction, and more are being planned. The college said it plans to raise the skill level of the work force by producing training materials and programs of study to support the industry, creating a pool of funds for tuition and training fees and training workers at each or the state's five community colleges in the Delta. |
