Bulldogs, Ducks best game of opening session

NORTH LITTLE ROCK - The best game of the first day of the NCAA Tournament at Alltel Arena featured the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Oregon Ducks.

The Bulldogs rallied from a 13-point second half deficit to beat the Ducks 76-69.

Oregon led 38-28 at halftime and pushed it to 41-28 when Malik Hairston hit a three-pointer 39 seconds into the second half.

From there, Mississippi State went on a 29-14 run to take a 57-54 lead with 8:01 left in the game.

Oregon reclaimed the lead at 58-57 on two free throws by Bryce Taylor with 6:53 left.

Mississippi State then began to pull away and led 74-63 with 19 seconds left.

Charles Rhodes led Mississippi State with 34 points on 10 of 12 shooting from the field and 14 of 18 from the foul line. Barry Stewart had 16 points. Jarvis Varnado had 11.

Hairston led Oregon with 22 points. Tajuan Porter had 18. Maarty Leunen had 13.

Memphis 87, Texas-Arlington 63

The Texas-Arlington Mavericks held an early lead against South top seed Memphis, but it faded quickly, along with hopes of becoming the first 16 seed to beat a No. 1 in NCAA Tournament history.

Texas-Arlington led 4-0 and 6-3 but the Tigers came away with a 87-63 rout of the Mavericks in the first round at Alltel Arena on Friday.

Memphis led 45-31 at halftime.

Chris Douglas-Roberts led Memphis with 23 points. Derrick Rose and Antonio Anderson had 17 points each.

Jermaine Griffin led Texas-Arlington with 11 points. Roger Guingard had 10.
