Arkansas Travelers open museum Wednesday, Mar 26, 2008 By Jeff Reed Arkansas News Bureau NORTH LITTLE ROCK - The gleam in his eye was almost like the one he had a year ago when Dickey-Stephens Park opened. Bill Valentine has something new to show off. On Tuesday, the new Travelers Museum was unveiled at the ball park. "I love this room," said Valentine, the Travelers executive vice president and chief operating officer. "There is no other park in professional baseball that had anything like this. They would all love to have it." The museum is located behind the home plate concourse and will be opened during Traveler games. There is a $1 admission. Group tours of the room are available by contacting the team. "We did that to control the crowd some," Valentine said. "If you have 7,000 here it can cause quite a problem. And we have to pay someone to work in there, and that adds up to about $40 a night." The museum features 100 years of Travelers history, including team photos, balls and bats used in games, an original catcher's mask, photos of the ballpark, newspapers clippings of team highlights and other information. "We had stuff that had been stored in an old safe over at Ray Winder," Valentine said. "Mr. Winder did a great job of saving stuff and through the years we would save stuff that had played a role in the team's history." |
