IRS to hold workshops on economic stimulus payments
Friday, Mar 28, 2008

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK - The Internal Revenue Service will hold a series of workshops across the state Saturday to reach certain Arkansans eligible for the federal economic stimulus package.

U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., said the workshops will be held at seven sites in Arkansas, targeting people who normally are not required to file an income tax return.

Filing a 2007 tax return is the only way eligible Americans can receive a rebate check.

Arkansans who do not pay federal income taxes may be eligible for a $300 check - $600 for married couples - if they have at least $3,000 in qualifying income.

Social Security benefits and disability income from the Veterans Administration are nontaxable, which means many recipients who receive only this type of income would not file a tax return. However, Social Security benefits and VA disability income are categorized as qualifying income for the rebate and count toward the $3,000 threshold.

Lincoln's amendment to the economic stimulus package enabled VA disability income to qualify for the rebate.

Starting in May, the IRS will issue economic stimulus payments of up to $600 - $1,200 for married couples - plus additional payments of $300 for each qualifying child. Most individuals do not need to do anything more than file their tax returns as they normally do to receive the rebate check.

The filing deadline is April 15.

The senator encouraged Arkansans who need assistance to attend an IRS workshop or call the IRS Hotline at 1-866-234-2942 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday.

The workshops locations and times include:
