Independent candidate hopefuls submit nominating petitions
Friday, May 2, 2008

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK - Seven people seeking to run as independent candidates for the state House of Representatives submitted nominating petitions to the secretary of state's office by the Thursday deadline, according to Natasha Naragon, spokeswoman for Secretary of State Charlie Daniels.

The office-seekers are Bonnie B. Brown of Mountain Home, who wants to run for the District 81 House seat; Trent Eilts of Cabot, District 15; Jeffrey D. Hall of Clinton, District 70; John Wayne Harty of Cabot, District 48; Marjorie LeClair of Shirley, District 70; Robert "Bob" E. Philyaw of Earle, District 54; and Mal Stokes Jr. of Barton, District 13.

The petitioners were required to collect a number of signatures equal to a least 3 percent of the votes cast in the most recent gubernatorial election in their district - in most cases 200 to 300 signatures.

The secretary of state's office will verify that the petitions contain the required number of valid signatures before certifying the candidates for the Nov. 4 general election ballot.
