Independent candidates certified for November ballot
Friday, May 9, 2008

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK - Arkansas Secretary of State Charlie Daniels on Thursday certified six independent candidates for the Nov. 4 general election ballot.

All six candidates are running for seats in the state House of Representatives. They are Bonnie B. Brown of Mountain Home, running for the District 81 House seat; Trent Eilts of Cabot, District 15; Jeffrey D. Hall of Clinton, District 70; Marjorie LeClair of Shirley, District 70; Robert "Bob" E. Philyaw of Earle, District 54; and Mal Stokes Jr. of Barton, District 13.

To qualify for the ballot, the candidates had to collect a number of signatures equal to a least 3 percent of the votes cast in their district in the most recent gubernatorial election - in most cases between 200 and 300.

Ten people filed notices of intent to run as independent candidates during the March candidate filing period. Seven of them submitted nominating petitions before the May 1 deadline, and six of those petitions contained the requisite number of valid signatures, according to the secretary of state's office.
