Floods, tornados destroy $27 million in infrastructure
Thursday, May 15, 2008

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK - Severe storms and flooding this spring have caused at least $27 million in damage to Arkansas infrastructure alone, according to a federal estimate provided to Gov. Mike Beebe's office Wednesday.

The estimate includes damage to roads, bridges, utility lines and other infrastructure from storms between Feb. 5 and April 3, Beebe spokesman Matt DeCample said.

The tally provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency does not include private property or agricultural losses, or damage from storms since April 3, DeCample said.

On Jan. 8, a tornado struck the small community of Appleton in Pope County, killing one person.

Less than a month later on Feb. 5, several tornadoes struck the state, killing 14. One of the tornadoes stayed on the ground for more than 100 miles from Conway to Baxter counties and hit the towns of Atkins, Clinton and Gassville, causing major damage.

On May 2, high winds and tornadoes killed seven people across the state. A tornado hit Stuttgart on Saturday, causing widespread damage but no deaths.

Hundreds of homes and businesses have been destroyed or damaged in the state, which also endured two months of heavy flooding earlier this year.
