Senate OKs Arkansas flood relief money Friday, May 23, 2008 Stephens Washington Bureau WASHINGTON - The Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly approved a spending bill that includes $39 million to help Arkansas' recovery from recent flooding. The state's share was part of $47 billion worth of domestic projects attached to a $165 billion bill to continue funding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The bill passed 75-22. President Bush has said he would veto the spending measure because includes money unrelated to the war. The bulk of the $39 million that would go to Arkansas would help the Army Corps of Engineers restore river navigation channels damaged during spring flooding. The Corps would evaluate the conditions of flood walls and levees and would complete other flood-related projects. About $6 million would go to purchase flood plain easements under the federal Emergency Watershed Program. Arkansas farmers and ranchers would be eligible to receive some money to rehabilitate farm land damaged by the floods. The House is expected to vote on the Senate bill next month. |
