Party for Socialism and Liberation certified for presidential ballot in Arkansas Wednesday, May 28, 2008 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - The Party for Socialism and Liberation has submitted enough signatures to place a presidential candidate on Arkansas' November general election ballot, the secretary of state's office said Tuesday. In addition, the Libertarian Party and the Constitution Party of Arkansas also have qualified to have the names of their presidential candidates appear on the general election ballot with those of candidates for the Democratic, Republican and Green parties. The Party of Socialism and Liberation submitted nearly 1,300 signatures, of which 1,000 were found to be valid signatures of registered Arkansas voters, said Natasha Naragon, spokeswoman for Secretary of State Charlie Daniels. The party needed 1,000 signatures to place their presidential candidate, Gloria LaRiva of California, on the Arkansas ballot. The deadline for independent and third-party presidential candidates to submit petitions to the secretary of state is Aug. 4. The Green Party of Arkansas is to select its presidential candidate during a convention in Little Rock on June 21. The four candidates seeking the party nomination are former U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney of Decatur, Ga.; Kent Mesplay of La Mesa, Calif.; Kat Swift of San Antonio and Jared A. Ball of Washington, D.C. The Libertarian Party and the Constitution Party also have yet to select their presidential candidates. |
