UPDATE: Verizon to buy Alltel Thursday, Jun 5, 2008 LITTLE ROCK - Verizon says in a news release it has agreed to buy Little Rock-based Alltel for $28.1 billion. There was no immediate word on what the announcements would mean for more than 3,000 employees at the company's headquarters. The merger is expected to be finalized by the end of the year. The release noted that Scott Ford, Alltel's chief executive officer, will remain with the company until the merger is complete. The merger between Verizon, the nation's second largest wireless carrier, and Alltel, No. 5 in the market, will mean the merged company will vault ahead of AT&T as the top wireless company. |
