BREAKING NEWS: CNBC reports Alltel selling to Verizon Thursday, Jun 5, 2008 LITTLE ROCK - News reports this morning say Verizon has agreed to buy Little Rock-based Alltel for $28.1 billion. CNBC, which broke the news of talks between the two companies on Wednesday, said the deal will make Verizon the largest mobile services company, moving it ahead of AT&T. Verizon is the nation's second-largest wireless carrier in terms of subscribers, while Alltel ranks fifth. The deal would catapult a newly formed company ahead of AT&T, currently the largest wireless company. Verizon is second and Alltel fifth. Shares of Verizon (NYSE: VZ) closed Wednesday at $36.98, down 38 cents. |
