Senate confirms designation for Fort Smith native Friday, Jun 6, 2008 Stephens Washington Bureau WASHINGTON - The Senate this week confirmed Fort Smith native and career diplomat Anne Woods Patterson to the position of career ambassador. President Bush appointed Patterson to the top level of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service late last year. Patterson, 58, is ambassador to Pakistan. She has held that job for about a year. The career ambassador title is an honorary designation given to those who have worked at least 15 years in the Senior Foreign Service and have shown "exceptionally distinguished" service to the government. A diplomat for more than three decades who briefly was the top U.S. delegate to the United Nations, Patterson also has served as an envoy to Colombia and El Salvador. |
