UA system budgets include raises despite state cuts Saturday, Jun 7, 2008 By Dan Craft Arkansas News Bureau MORRILTON - Budgets approved Friday will enable most schools in the University of Arkansas system to give staff and faculty 2 percent raises despite cuts in state funding announced earlier this spring, UA President B. Alan Sugg said. The UA Board of Trustees approved nearly $1.7 billion in budgets for the 17 schools and units of the university system. State fiscal officers recently announced $107 million in budget cuts for the fiscal year that begins July 1, including about $32 million from the state's two- and four-year higher education institutions. Tuition increases at most of the UA system schools helped offset the worst of the blow, but each school had to prioritize, Sugg said. "The new money they have, for the most part, is from tuition increases. Everybody is assuming the cuts to state funding will stick," Sugg said. "These budgets are pretty lean." The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences accounted for just more than $1 billion of the budget. The medical school's budget includes hospital operations, UAMS Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson said. |
