House commemorates Ozark National Forest centennial Tuesday, Jun 10, 2008 Stephens Washington Bureau WASHINGTON - The House on Monday adopted a resolution to recognize the 100th anniversary of the Ozark National Forest. The forest in western Arkansas - about 1.2 million acres mostly in the Ozark Mountains - was established on March 6, 1908. It was the first federally protected stand of hardwoods in the United States. The tallest mountain in Arkansas, Mount Magazine, and the popular Blanchard Springs Caverns are both on forest land. The centennial resolution was approved unanimously in the House. The legislation was introduced by Rep. John Boozman, R-Rogers, and sponsored by the state's other House members. |
