Commission lets bids on highway projects

LITTLE ROCK - The state Highway and Transportation Department let bids for 61 highway projects totaling $94.3 million on Tuesday, including $6.5 million to widen a state highway in Benton County.

Bids for the projects totaled about $2 million higher than department officials estimated. That was blamed on rising cost of fuel and other oil-based products, such as asphalt.

Highway Director Dan Flowers said each of the 61 bids will be reviewed individually to make sure the contractor has met all requirements before they are officially awarded.

The Benton County state highway project calls for the widening of Arkansas 72 from two lanes to five lanes for 1.58 miles west from Arkansas 71.

Low bidder on the project was APAC-Arkansas Inc. McClinton-Anchor Division of Fayetteville.

Also let Tuesday was an $8.25 million bid to build a Vilonia bypass on Highway 64 in Faulkner County. The low bidder was C. Watts & Sons construction Co. Inc. of Oklahoma City.

Among the other bids let Tuesday were 24 projects totaling $10.6 million for repaving work on state highways.

The projects are part of a resurfacing program funded last year by the Legislature with $56 million from the state's budget surplus.

Before Tuesday, 64 projects totaling nearly $40 million had been awarded for resurfacing across the state.
