Home sales fall 19 percent in April, prices down 2 percent

LITTLE ROCK - The number of homes sold in Arkansas in fell 18.9 percent in April compared to the same month last year and the average price of homes sold fell 2.1 percent, the Arkansas Realtors Association reported Wednesday.

Statewide, 2,187 homes were sold in April for an average price of $148,487. In April last year, 2,698 homes sold for an average price of $151,630.

Pulaski County had the most home sales in the state in April, although sales fell by 20.3 percent from April 2007. Benton and Washington counties rounded out the top three counties last month in terms of sales, reporting declines of 24.2 and 33.2 percent, respectively.

Sebastian and Saline counties trailed in home sales, and there sales declined 14.4 percent and 21.6 percent, respectively.

Benton County had the highest average home price at $190,733, up 2.1 percent. Cleburne County had the largest increase in price among the top five counties with the highest average prices. There, home prices rose 25.5 percent, according to the association's report.

The report contains data for more than 50 percent of the state's housing market and includes all the major metropolitan areas.
