Huckabee gets job at Fox News

LITTLE ROCK - Former Gov. and Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said Thursday he would speak from "inside the dragon's belly" in his new job as a political commentator for Fox News.

Huckabee and a Fox executive confirmed the arrangement.

"We've signed him, and we're very proud to have done so," John Moody, Fox's senior vice president of news, told the Arkansas News Bureau. "We look forward to getting his expertise in the political season in which we find ourselves."

Huckabee, who abandoned his surprisingly effective campaign in March after Arizona Sen. John McCain secured the GOP nomination, said he would try to speak for hard-working Americans who feel their voices are not being heard.

"I saw that on the campaign trail and continue to see as I speak to groups of all kinds around the country as well as campaign for other candidates," Huckabee said in an e-mail. "I'm looking forward to what I hope will be a very satisfying relationship not only for the Fox News Channel and me, but even more for the people of America."

Moody said he could not discuss the terms of the contract.

Asked if the job might lead to Huckabee being offered his own show on the network, Moody said, "We just don't now yet. He's going to be a contributor right now."

Huckabee, Arkansas' governor for 10 1/2 years, pulled off a stunning victory in the Iowa caucus and followed with primary victories in seven other states despite running his campaign on a shoestring.

The Hope native ended his campaign March 4 after McCain attained the requisite number of delegates to clinch the party's nomination.

Huckabee has appeared as a guest on NBC's "Meet the Press," Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" and other programs. Some observers credited him with making shrewd use of television appearances to overcome paltry finances during the campaign.

"He's obviously very gifted on a number of topics, including having a great on-air presence, as he proved, I think, during the Republican primaries," Moody said Thursday.

Huckabee's experience as a presidential candidate makes him especially well suited to comment on the race between McCain and Democrat Barack Obama, the presumptive major party nominees.

"I think anybody who's actually run for president probably has a better idea what these two men are about to go through, even if Gov. Huckabee didn't win the party's nomination," Moody said.
