State Republican Party headquarters burglarized Tuesday, Jun 17, 2008 By John Lyon Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Police had no suspects Monday in a weekend burglary at the Republican Party of Arkansas' downtown headquarters. Two laptop computers were stolen in the break-in. Someone apparently forced open the front door of the building on West Sixth Street early Saturday and took the computers, worth about $3,000, state GOP spokeswoman Elizabeth Aymond said. Aymond would not say what information was contained on the computers. Police were dispatched to the scene at 2:31 a.m. Saturday in response to a burglar alarm, Little Rock Police Lt. Terry Hastings said. Officers found the front door open and no one inside. Hastings said Monday the investigation was still in the early stages, but so far police had found nothing to indicate the burglary was politically motivated or was committed by someone familiar with the headquarters. Aymond said the headquarters had been burglarized before, but she believed the most recent incident occurred two or more years ago. The alarm probably prevented the burglary from being worse, Aymond said. Even so, additional security measures may be taken, she said. "We're evaluating our security system and most likely will look into how we can make it even more effective," Aymond said. |
