Former Greenwood teacher denied rehearing in sex case

LITTLE ROCK - The state Court of Appeals on Wednesday denied a rehearing request by a former Greenwood schoolteacher convicted of having sex with a student.

The court denied 40-year-old Deanna Bobo's request for a rehearing without explanation.

Bobo was convicted in September 2006 of two counts of first-degree sexual assault and sentenced to two consecutive six-year prison terms. Prosecutors said Bobo had sex with a male student on two occasions while she was a teacher at Raymond G. Wells Junior High School in 2005.

The Court of Appeals rejected an appeal by Bobo last month. Bobo argued that testimony from witnesses who said they saw the male student touch Bobo's breast at school - months before she was accused of having sex with the student - should not have been admitted at her trial.

The appellate court found that the testimony demonstrated an intimacy between Bobo and the student and corroborated the boy's testimony that he and Bobo later became sexually involved.

In Bobo's petition for rehearing, filed June 13 by attorney Sam "Chip" Sexton of Fort Smith, she said witnesses testified that the male student "flipped" her breast, or placed his hand under her breast and flipped it upward. The testimony established that the act was not a sign of sexual involvement or intimacy but "a type of teasing," Bobo claimed.
