Bush to discuss mortgage crisis, raise money for state GOP
Tuesday, Jul 1, 2008

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK - President Bush is scheduled to make his first trip to Arkansas since October today to discuss the mortgage crisis and raise money for the state Republican Party.

Bush is to first participate in an afternoon roundtable discussion in North Little Rock with clients of the Family Service Agency, a nonprofit that offers housing counseling services.

Later, the president will headline a private fundraiser on behalf of the Republican Party of Arkansas at the home of George O'Connor in Little Rock.

A $150 donation will gain a contributor access to the reception and a photo opportunity with the president will cost $5,000.

Bush won Arkansas in 2000 and 2004 and remains a popular draw among Arkansas Republicans, state GOP chairman Dennis Milligan said, despite a national approval rating below 30 percent.

Spurred by a collapse in the subprime lending market, families across the country have lost or are in danger of losing their homes in a mortgage crisis that has not hit as hard in Arkansas as in some other states.

Though foreclosures have increased somewhat in the state, officials say one reason they have not risen dramatically is because home prices did not explode with income growth in the same way they did in some of the real estate boom markets like California, Florida and Washington, D.C.
