BREAKING NEWS: Immigration measure falls short of signature threshold
Monday, Jul 7, 2008

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK - Supporters of an initiative to largely ban illegal immigrants from receiving public benefits in the state have abandoned trying to make the November ballot.

Today is the deadline for ballot issue supporters to submit signatures to the secretary of state's office, and Secure Arkansas chairmwoman Jeanie Burlsworth says the group is nearly 10,000 signatures short of the 61,974 names needed to qualify the proposed initiated act for the Nov. 4 general election ballot.

"We came pretty close," Bulsworth says, adding, "Secure Arkansas is not going away."

Also today, backers turned in just over 65,000 signatures in support of a proposed initiated act to bar unmarried couples from adopting children or serving as foster parents in Arkansas, while supporters of a proposed constitutional amendment to lengthen county sheriffs' terms to four years notified Secretary of State Charlie Daniels they did not muster the more than 77,000 signatures needed to quality for the ballot.
